Artist Series Post #14: Matt Anderson

Matt Anderson
WOW....
When work gets busy...it gets BUSY.
Sorry I've been out of the loop Urban Decay Fans. I guess that's the life of an artist for you! You never know when things are going to happen for you. One day your just sitting in your room with a dim light and a pencil, marking up your next custom, and the next thing you know, you're being pulled around by your coat-tails by strangers requesting work to magically drop from your back-side fully customized to their individual wants and desires....I wonder if that's how Matt feels?

Meet custom toy designer Matt Anderson:

I've been in the Urban Art scene for about 2 1/2 years now. Most of my childhood and up until I was about 20 I was always into sketch art and comic art. I would usually do that everyday. I never really picked up on sculpting or 3d art until about 3 years ago. A really good friend of mine had introduced me into the scene. He had collected much of the designer toys we all know and love today and upon mocking his collection I was in turn pointed in the direction of my first custom. I've brought various style customs to life over the last couple years from a smoke blowing "Raffy" dragon to Splinter cell characters with working night vision goggles to my current robotic customs with moving heads and such. Although I have been listed as the " steampunk " style artist I do try to push myself to try other things in the creation world. I have been creating customs ever since and just about everyday. Its very addicting and something that I have grown to love as more than just a hobby.

From the Artists mouth:
With every custom I create I strive to push the envelope on what can be accomplished while creating not only visually appealing works of art but functional ones as well. With every piece I try to incorporate a mechanical working aspect whether it is moving clock gears to lighted elements to robotics. I like to test myself by working on various platforms from 3" to Mega sizes to add a little functionality to each piece. Bringing not only a great piece of art to display on ones shelf, but also a piece of art that has it's own personality. I hope to continue creating customs and collectibles that just don't seem possible to create and one day produce a version of my own creation.

I remember when I first spoke to Matt I was a little shocked at just how "country" he sounded. I thought to myself, man that guy has an accent! Then I met him and I gotta tell ya, his voice does not match his looks. Think : farmhand gets his ass beat by metal-band and dumped in NYC left to survive on his own devices".
And Matt is up to the challenge! HA!
Its nice to see a good-ol-boy from Chester VA keeping the toys alive!
Steampunk or not, I think Matt is on to something here.
